Is ORTHO MICRONOR effective?
Yes. Taken perfectly, ORTHO MICRONOR is 99.5%
effective in preventing pregnancy. With typical
use, which includes missed pills, ORTHO MICRONOR
is 95% effective, which is slightly less
effective than combination oral contraceptives
containing estrogen and progestin. To be most
effective, ORTHO MICRONOR must be taken at
the same time each day - or, if necessary,
not more than 3 hours after that same time
every day, even if you are experiencing spotting
or bleeding. Make sure you follow your doctor's
or healthcare professional's instructions
carefully.
What makes ORTHO MICRONOR different from other
oral contraceptives?
ORTHO MICRONOR contains no estrogen, which
makes it appropriate for women who cannot or
should not take estrogen. Additionally, ORTHO MICRONOR
is suitable for breast-feeding women desiring
contraception, because no adverse effects have
been found on breast-feeding performance or
the health, growth or development of the infant.
ORTHO MICRONOR also differs from other birth
control pills because "active" tablets (containing
hormone) are taken continually, every day,
with no break between packs.
And ORTHO MICRONOR comes in the DIALPAK® Tablet Dispenser, which
helps you take the right pill day after day.
How does ORTHO MICRONOR work?
ORTHO MICRONOR prevents pregnancy by suppressing
ovulation (release of the egg from the ovary)
in approximately half of the cycles. It also
thickens the cervical mucus at the entrance
to the womb (the uterus) so the sperm can't
get through to the egg.
ORTHO MICRONOR also has an effect on some hormones, the fallopian
tubes and the lining of the uterus. So you
can feel very confident that your pill is
working to prevent pregnancy.
When should I start taking ORTHO MICRONOR
if I am breast-feeding?
If you are fully breast-feeding (not giving
your baby any food or formula), you may start
your pills 6 weeks after delivery. However,
if you are partially breast-feeding (giving
your baby some food or formula), you should
start taking pills by 3 weeks after delivery.
Should I take my pill at a particular
time of day?
For ORTHO MICRONOR to protect you against pregnancy,
it is important that you take ORTHO MICRONOR
every day - at the same time each day or, if
you forget, not more than 3 hours after that
same time every day. Select a time that's easy
for you to remember. If there is something
you do at the same time each day - for instance,
brushing your teeth - take your pill then.
Missed pills not only may increase the risk
of pregnancy, but also may increase your chances
of experiencing some side effects, such as
bleeding between periods.
If I miss a period,
is it a sign that I'm pregnant?
It is not uncommon for your period to be early
or late when you are taking progestin-only
pills. However, you should take a pregnancy
test if you miss a period and:
- You took one
or more pills late or missed taking them,
- Had
sex without a backup method,
- Or if it has
been more than 45 days since the beginning
of your last period.
Will ORTHO MICRONOR affect my ability to
become pregnant later?
No. ORTHO MICRONOR will not delay your ability
to get pregnant.
What if I want to become pregnant?
Just stop taking ORTHO MICRONOR. Most women
have no problem getting pregnant after they
stop the pill. If you think you might be
pregnant, or you become pregnant, contact
your doctor or healthcare professional.
Even though research has shown that oral
contraceptives will not harm your unborn baby, it is always
best not to take any medicine that you do
not need when you are pregnant.
When I take ORTHO MICRONOR, will I gain weight
or get acne?
For most women, the answer is usually "no." Acne, hair
growth, and weight gain are rare with progestin-only
oral contraceptives.
